Set Your Default
Everyone always talks about setting healthy goals, and their struggle to stick to them. Why are changes to ones daily routines and lifestyle so hard to change? Because people go about it the wrong way.
What do I mean by this? People take the all or nothing approach. They make too drastic of changes in their lives and that are unsustainable.
Changing your default is a better way of thinking of making a habit change. Changing your default is all about identifying your habits and triggers of those habits, good or bad. Think about it—what is the first thing you do in the morning? Do you go for a cup of coffee? A sweet treat? What about lunch at work? Are you unprepared and end up munching on the latest office party grub? Changing the small systems you put in place in your everyday life will set you up for sustainable success.
And…these changes don’t have to be drastic. One week you can start prepping lunch for yourself at night so that you skip the office grub. Or you can go to sleep 20 minutes earlier so you can wake up 20 minutes earlier to get a walk in. Aim to change one thing in your daily routine per week. Recognize the bad triggers in your life and replace them with food ones.
Lastly, don’t deprive yourself of the things you LOVE. Identify the soul foods in your life and allow yourself to eat those. Focus more on an overall healthy approach with 90% of the good foods and 10% of the soul food (about 2.5 soul food meals/week).
Okay so remember this—changing your habits is less of a drastic approach and more of a system approach. Think about your healthy or unhealthy routines and figure out what the triggers are of those routines. Do you have candy on the kitchen counter? Do you sleep with the phone in your room? Remove the bad triggers and replace them with the good. Change your system, set a new healthy, easy default. Make sense?
